On February 19, 2026, President Donald Trump announced that he would direct the Pentagon and other federal agencies to begin identifying and releasing files tied to extraterrestrial life, UFOs, and what the government now calls unidentified aerial phenomena. He shared the news on Truth Social, saying the move came after “tremendous interest” from the public.

Trump wrote that the order covers “any and all other information” linked to these complex and important matters. He named Pete Hegseth as one of the officials who would oversee the process. The announcement was bold, but light on specifics.

What Is Being Released?

E Online / Trump’s statement did not explain if the files include classified material or only records already cleared for public view.

That gap matters because the government has released UFO documents before. Many of those records offered reports and radar data, but no proof of alien contact.

Chris Rutkowski, a longtime UFO researcher and coordinator of the Canadian UFO Survey, called the announcement puzzling. Chris Rutkowski said the statement does not clarify if secret files are involved. He also noted that the Pentagon has already shared thousands of pages over the years, raising the question of what new information could still be hidden.

Skeptics argue that this could turn into a paperwork shuffle. Agencies might review files, stamp them for release, and publish material that experts have already seen. Supporters counter that a presidential directive could prompt officials to open previously locked doors.

The truth likely sits somewhere in between. Some files may add context, while others may simply repeat known facts. Until documents appear, no one can say how explosive this release will be.

Obama’s Comments Added Fuel

This latest push did not happen in a vacuum. Just days earlier, Barack Obama spoke about aliens during a podcast interview released on February 14. When asked if aliens are real, he said, “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them.”

The comment spread fast online. Obama later clarified that he meant the statistical odds of life existing somewhere in the vast universe. He stressed that during his presidency, he saw no evidence of extraterrestrials making contact with Earth, and that nothing was hidden at Area 51.

Trump reacted strongly while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. He accused Obama of sharing classified information and said, “He’s not supposed to be doing that. He made a big mistake.” When asked if he personally believes aliens are real, Trump answered, “Well, I don’t know if they’re real or not.”

That exchange added a political edge to the UFO debate. What began as a podcast remark quickly turned into a back-and-forth between two presidents. The topic moved from fringe curiosity to headline news again.

The Pentagon’s Record So Far

Trump / IG / Public interest in UFOs has grown steadily in recent years. Congress has held hearings. Military pilots have shared strange encounters. Lawmakers from both parties have called for more transparency.

In response, the Defense Department created the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, known as AARO. The office tracks and investigates reports of unusual aerial sightings across air, sea, space, and even underwater domains.

In a 2024 report, AARO stated that it found no verified evidence of alien life or extraterrestrial technology in government possession. The office reported receiving 1,652 UAP sightings as of 2024. Many of those cases were later linked to balloons, drones, birds, weather patterns, or sensor glitches.

That report disappointed some believers who hoped for a breakthrough. Others saw it as proof that the government is taking reports seriously and applying careful review. The numbers show that sightings are common, but explanations often follow.

Trump’s new directive could push AARO and other agencies to revisit older cases. It could also force a deeper audit of classified programs. Still, officials have not confirmed what internal reviews will look like.
